Democrat Tom Dolan yesterday officially announced his candidacy for Suffolk County’s 14th Legislative District seat and vowed he would take a pay freeze as County Executive Steve Bellone did, if he is elected.
Dolan made his announcement, with nearly 100 supporters behind him, at the 50-yard line of the Venetian Shores town park football field used by the Lindenhurst Bulldogs, a local junior football and cheerleading organization of which he is vice president.

“Steve Bellone showed his leadership by coming into county government and freezing his own pay. I will do the same,” said Dolan, a financial planner whose late father was once Babylon Democratic chairman.

Suffolk lawmakers make $96,570 annually. When Bellone assumed office last year, he took...| read more ››

In a race to replace a lifelong Babylon Village resident at the head of the Suffolk County Legislature, two men from Lindenhurst have stepped up to campaign for the now opened seat – Republican Kevin McCaffrey and the newcomer, Democrat Tom Dolan.

Dolan, a lifelong Lindenhurst resident, launched his campaign on Monday afternoon at Lindenhurst’s Venetian Shores Park, noting his lack of governmental experience but also his experience at helping plan a fiscally safe future for businesses and families throughout the community.

“I think its important, especially with what’s going on, fiscally that we take a look at things to make sure they’re more effective,” Dolan told Patch. “I think we have to look to have people [employees] contribute towards...| read more ››

Long time Lindenhurst resident Tom Dolan officially kicked off his campaign for county legislator at Venetian Shores on Monday afternoon.

“As a professional financial planner, it is my responsibility to help and keep businesses and families make smart decisions to secure their futures,” said Dolan, a board member of the Lindenhurst Bulldogs Football & Cheerleading League and professional financial planner. “I find it so fitting to be standing here today, a kid from Lindenhurst, where from this spot I announce I am running for county legislator.”

Consolidating to Save Money, Improve Services

With your support, I was elected as County Executive to make Suffolk County a great place to live, raise a family and operate a business. I work each day to overcome impediments to improving Suffolk County by making the tough decisions to move us forward. For years we have spoken in our region about eliminating unnecessary government offices and the need for common sense consolidations that save taxpayer dollars while delivering more efficient services. This November, we will do something about it.

I have introduced a resolution that asks the Suffolk County Legislature to allow the voters to decide in a referendum whether we should merge these offices under the leadership of an elected Chief Financial Officer. This resolution to...| read more ››

Bellone: Merge Suffolk treasurer, comptroller offices

Democratic County Executive Steve Bellone Thursday proposed the merger of Suffolk's treasurer and comptroller's offices, both of which are run by elected Republicans, saying it would save $1 million a year.

Bellone released a report that said creating the single department would cut "duplicative" management jobs.

He said he will ask the county legislature to place a referendum on the November ballot to authorize the merger. If the referendum passes, Bellone would appoint an interim chief financial officer to run the new office throughout 2014, and an elected leader would begin a four-year term on Jan. 1, 2015. Suffolk is the last of New York's 62 counties to still elect a treasurer and comptroller.

The State of Our County

On Tuesday night, I was honored to deliver my second State of the County address as Suffolk County Executive. If you missed it, you can view it here.

I talked about the progress we have made over the first year of our Administration as well as the significant challenges still facing Suffolk County. This year, I declared that the State of our County is "rebuilding" in the wake of crises ranging from our budget to Superstorm Sandy.

As you know, I inherited a budget deficit that was estimated at more than $400 million over three years and rather than continuing the infighting that had ground our county to a halt, I rolled up my sleeves and worked with the...| read more ››

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said Saturday he is bypassing LIPA's top managers and working directly with local substation coordinators to restore power to Suffolk County residents by Sunday night.

"We are taking matters into our own hands here," said Bellone at a 2 p.m. news conference in the parking lot at the LIPA / National Grid office in Brentwood.

He blasted the home inspection process LIPA implemented five days after the height of superstorm Sandy.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer also spoke about his efforts in negotiating with LIPA attorneys over restoring power to the homes south of Montauk Highway that were without serious structural damage.

Bellone also asked residents not to take their frustrations out on individual...| read more ››
